Hazel Lorraine More was the youngest child of George Harold More (1890 -1957) and Alice Margaret Lowery (1895 -1966). She was born in Pilot Grove Township, Faribault County, Minnesota on May 14, 1923. She attended schools in Elmore, and graduated from Elmore High School in 1941.

On December 12, 1945, Hazel married William James Cooan (4/18/1921 - 6/26/1994) at the Methodist Church in Elmore, Minnesota. They had four children (Leslie, Alice, Avis, and Willis). Hazel was a homemaker, and loved her children - and loved being around people. She served as Justice of the Peace in Elmore for two terms, and performed a number of weddings at her home on the main highway in Elmore.

From 1960 - 1975, Hazel and Bill were foster parents - sponsoring 26 children under their care during that time period. Hazel much enjoyed caring for these children and making a difference, and they were a source of joy for her. Also, for a number of years, Hazel was a bookkeeper for Jones Livestock in Elmore and SEI in Blue Earth. She also worked for the newspaper in Blue Earth updating local news from Elmore.

Hazel's husband, Bill, passed away on June 26, 1994 while they were living in Lakota, Iowa. Hazel spent her last few years at St Luke's Home in Blue Earth, where she passed away at age 83 on September 1, 2006. Both Hazel and Bill were buried at Riverview Cemetery near Elmore, Minnesota.
