Thomas Edward More was the youngest of seven children and fourth son born to Andrew Robert More and Jeanette Allan Weir. He always went by the name Edward. He was born in April of 1860 in Pilot Grove Township in Faribault County, Minnesota, and the only child born after his parent settled there. He likely listened to his older siblings' and parents' stories of their long ride across the ocean, traveling up the Great Lakes, and their long journey in a covered wagon across the mighty Mississippi River. He was the only one that had not been a part of any of those adventures.
He was just two months old on the 1860 Federal Census living with his parents and all six siblings on their farm in Pilot Grove Township (a farm he would eventually take over as the youngest son). He remained on the farm and was found with his parents and some siblings on the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census records as the community and farm grew over the years.
At age 24, he married on January 15, 1885 to Catherine Scott (1860 - 1955), daughter of Hugh Scott and Catherine McGuire. Her father was a Scottish immigrant that came to America from Glasgow on August 18, 1852 on the ship "Sea Nymph". He was a farmer that had lived in Palmyra, Jefferson County, Wisconsin where Edward's family had lived prior to coming to Pilot Grove. By the early 1860s, they had joined their old neighbors and too, were farming in Pilot Grove Township.
By the 1895 Minnesota State Census, Edward and his wife and two children were living in the household with his parents (his wife's parents were living next door) in Pilot Grove Township. During this time period, Edward worked in a partnership with his older brother, Robert, to buy and sell large amounts of cattle and swine. Additionally, they farmed some 1300 acres, which was very substantial at that time.
By the 1900 Federal Census, Edward's parents were likely aging and Edward was then the head of the household on the home farm. With him in the household were his wife and two children (Mildred 13 and Floyd 5), Edward's parents, and three hired employees to help on their farm.
Both of Edward's parents died in the next two years and he remained on the farm. He was there on the 1910 Federal Census in Pilot Grove listed as a stock farmer. Their son, Floyd 14, was in the household as well as two hired hands and a niece, Melissa Scott 7.
By the 1920 Federal Census, Edward had moved to the city of Blue Earth, Minnesota and was living on West Sixth Street. With him were his wife and niece, Melissa Scott (17), working as a servant.
Thomas Edward More died on June 9, 1922 at age 62. He was buried in the Pilot Grove Cemetery near his parents and not far from their farm. His wife, Catherine continued to live in Blue Earth. She was found there on the 1930 Federal Census as a widow living on East 7th Street and living alone.
By 1940 Federal Census, she was living in St Paul, Minnesota with her daughter, Mildred and her husband and family. She was age 80. She died at the age of 94 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. She was buried in Pilot Grove Cemetery next to her husband, Edward. |
