Her father, Harmon Thompson, served in the War of 1812 under Andrew Jackson. Her mother was Indian, Nancy "Tender Twig" (Richardson) Thompson.

Her tombstone says she was 82, which would make her born in 1821, but the "Descendants of Matthias Chitwood" book says she was born in 1819.
