Martha (White) Chitwood was born about 1749 in Orange Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of Thomas White (abt 1730-abt 1815) and Sarah Shelton, also born in Virginia.

Martha married James Chitwood (1751-1839) about 1769. He was born in Virginia. James was the son of Richard Chitwood (1722-1785) and Winnie Randolph (1724-1754), also natives of Virginia

Martha and James are known to have had at least seven children. They were Winnie Chitwood (1774-1840), Pleasant Chitwood (1775-1751), Lazarus Chitwood (1778-1840), William M. Chitwood (1787-1871), Daniel Chitwood (1795-1852) and Elizabeth Chitwood (1796-1884).

Martha died about 1830 in or near Chitwood (now Winfield), Campbell Co. (now Scott Co.), Tennessee about the age of 81. It is thought that she was buried in the Chitwood Cemetery. Formally in Campbell Co., TN, the cemetery now lies in Scott Co., Tennessee.

Martha's husband James died about nine years later on Mar. 4, 1839, also in Chitwood (now Winfield) at the age of 89. He too, is thought to be buried in the Chitwood Cemetery, with a unidentifiable or now non-existent marker.
